Major Update – The Great Expedition

● The Great Expedition has begun.

The Great Expedition is released. We hope that many of our Adventurers will enjoy this new content as we have put in a lot of effort in preparing it.
The Great Expedition holds a special meaning for us. That’s because there were no initial plans to expand on the ocean contents in the earlier planning stages of Black Desert, which made this process much more grueling. Especially because the foundations had to be set, so it took multiple trial and error attempts. Many of which we had to “start from square one” again. We found it terribly regrettable that this caused the delay of content’s release. We would like to apologize for all the Adventurers that have waited patiently.

However! What’s important now is, we can proudly present the results to you now! Out in the open seas... this phrase definitely gave the developers a great call to adventure, and it’s probably the same for our Adventurers as well.
Now that the Great Expedition has begun, get on board and set sail fast to start enjoying what we have prepared for you. We sincerely appreciate your patients.

- Sailors are gathered at taverns and inns in Velia and Epheria looking for captains to head out to the open seas. On the islands, Papu and Otter Barterers are in position and competing against each other to barter with Adventurers. There are people adrift in the distant waters of Margoria each with their own story. Unfamiliar tidal currents are flowing out from the newly discovered mysterious island of Oquilla's Eye. This caused the ocean creatures to get pushed out deep into Calpheon and Balenos, and are threatening their residents.

  •
  • ● Barterers, NPCs drifting around Margoria, and Oquilla's Eye NPCs and related knowledge categories were added.
  •
  • ● Knowledge for the following sea creatures can now be obtained by defeating them.

* Knowledge can be obtained from the “Hungry” and “Young” sea creatures as well.

- Hekaru

- Ocean Stalker

- Candidum

- Nineshark

- Black Rust

- Goldmont Small Battleship

- Goldmont Medium Battleship

Bartali Sailboat was added to the shop of Proix, the Tavern owner of the tavern in Velia “Dancing Marlin Tavern”. Igor Bartali will no longer provide Old Bartali Sailboat through quests as Proix’s ships are better for the ocean.

 - The quest “[Event] To Vell's Realm” can no longer be accepted.

  • The main quest “[The Great Expedition] Oquilla's Eye” was added to unveil the secrets shrouding the legends and truth about Oquilla's Eye as a mercenary hired by Jarette Domongatt.

Bartering

  • Bartering, where you can barter through your ships, was added.
  • Bartering, a primitive method of trade where goods were moved from one location to another, is being introduced. This is to focus on a different kind of fun instead of the older method of trade where you would simply aim for a profit margin through the difference in item prices.

At first, bartering was designed to only progress as a captain out at sea and not have any currency of value on land. However, after the previous game interview, Adventurers gave us the feedback that they would prefer activities the connect the land and sea organically. After contemplating this point, we’ve decided to make it possible to accumulate wealth that also has value on land naturally.

From now on, trade goods that were not being traded as much on land will find new value through bartering. Additionally, you can also obtain a brand new type of currency in Black Desert by reachings the final goal of this content - “Sea Coins”. This currency was spread by a secretive organization, but it’s known to bring great riches and glory to the person that gathers them. That man will soon be unveiled at Crow’s Nest.

- Bartering is available through Papu / Otter Barterers positions on islands and drifting sailors in Margoria. If the required items are available onboard the ship, then they will automatically be exchanged and loaded.

(Please note, items in your character’s Inventory cannot be used to barter.)

- The following bartering happens on all island nodes out at sea.

Level 1 Trade

Land Materials -> Level 1 Sea Trade Good

Level 2 Trade

Level 1 Sea Trade Good -> 2 Sea Trade Good

Level 3 Trade

Level 2 Sea Trade Good -> Level 3 Sea Trade Good

Level 4 Trade

Level 3 Sea Trade Good -> Level 4 Sea Trade Good

Level 5 Trade

Level 4 Sea Trade Good -> Level 5 Sea Trade Good

Final Trade

Level 5 Sea Trade Good -> Sea Coin

Other Trade

Trade Goods -> New ship materials and enhancement materials

- Certains barters offer materials needed to improve new ships and equipment enhancement materials.

- Obtained “Sea Coins” can be seen under the LT bar in your inventory.

Additionally, Sea Trade Goods can be sold to vendors for silver starting with level 3 and up. The price increases as the level of the goods increase.

Level 1 Sea Trade Good (800LT)

Cannot be sold

Level 2 Sea Trade Good (800LT)

Cannot be sold

Level 3 Sea Trade Good (900LT)

1,000,000 Silver (Can be sold)

Level 4 Sea Trade Good (1,000LT)

2,000,000 Silver (Can be sold)

Level 5 Sea Trade Good (1,000LT)

5,000,000 Silver (Can be sold)

- The barter item list reset every day in the morning according to the time in Black Desert. You can exchange 100 times every 4 hours. (A day in Black Desert is around 4 hours of real-time.)

- Offers for bartering will come from a small number of islands at first. However, the more you barter, increasing number of Papus and Otters from more islands will start giving you offers.

  •
  • ● Storage Keepers from each of the regions have turned their attention towards bartering and have started to stock up on trade items.

* Sea Trade Goods can be sold through “Currency Exchange” at the same price they are sold to regular vendors.

* Level 3 - 5 Sea Trade Goods can be sold to regular vendors while only Level 5 Sea Trade Goods can be sold to the “Currency Exchange”.

- Level 3 Sea Trade Good

- Level 4 Sea Trade Good

- Level 5 Sea Trade Good

  • Barter Information can be found on the Barter Information window, located in the bottom right sections of the World Map (M).
  • - The camera will move to the island when you click on the trade good in the Barter UI.

Special Bartering

  • ● While bartering, special bartering offers can become available at a low chance through Barterer NPCs on each of the islands.
  • ● Special barters are event like barters that can be made available by random chance during regular bartering. It happens much less often compared to regular barters, but special bartering allows you to barter for expensive items or a large sum of Sea Coins.

- The more times you repeatedly barter, increases the probability a special barter will become available.

- If you barter Gold Bars through special bartering, then you can get Sea Coins or expensive items that cannot be obtained through regular bartering.

- You must arrive at the island to know what item you will get from the special barter.

- When a special barter becomes available, it appears on the World Map (M) Barter Information UI with a golden badge icon.

- Information about the area where the special barter is available can be found on the Barter Information window.

- A system message will be displayed when a special barter becomes available.

- You can select between regular barters and special barters on the Barter window.

- The goods information for Special Bartering will not change every 4 hours.

- No new special barters will become available if the goods are not bartered for an already existing special barter.

Sea Coin Exchange

  • ● A new vendor that accepts Sea Coins was added.

- This vendor can be accessed through < Ravinia >, the Sea Coin Exchange on Crow’s Nest. Various ocean related items like Khan's Concentrated Magic can be bought here.

  • ● Exchange 10 Sea Coins through the Sea Coin Exchange to get “Sea Coin Coupons”. These coupons can be exchanged through < Ravinia >,  the Sea Coin Exchange, for certain items that can be sold for silver.

Ships can be upgraded by interacting with the Wharf Manager then selecting the ship you want to upgrade.

Previously, workers would build ships for you usings the materials you’ve worked hard to gather. The arrival of new ships must have been exciting news for our Adventurers, but also worrying about gathering all the materials required to make them. There may also have been concerns for perhaps the older ships that you’ve put hard work into building might have gone to waste.

Therefore, we have created the Upgrade system to build the new ships using the preexisting ships.

● The sailing skill "Volley" was added to the new ships Epheria Caravel, Epheria Galleass, Epheria Carrack - Advance, Balance, Volante, Valor.

- The skill Volley can be used by left clicking or right clicking your mouse to fire the cannons on your left or right while steering your ship. The skill is available from Sailing Lv. Beginner 1.

- The cooldown for the skill Volley is different for each ship.

- You cannot get off your ship while the skill Volley is on cooldown.

  • ● Manage ships before setting sail by interacting with Wharf Managers.

- Manage Sailors: Manage the preparations of hired sailors for setting sail.

- Load Cargo: Able to load items in the Town Storage/character Inventory to the ships.

- Supply: Able to supply Rations and Cannonballs to ships.

- Remote Collection: Spend a certain amount of silver to collect your ship remotely. However, the ship will receive 10% damage and negatively affect the sailors and trade goods on board.

  • ● The Cannonball Capacity function was added to the Galley, Epheria Sailboat/Frigate and the new large ships.

Now, the large ships can fire cannons with carrying the item Cannonball for Ship.

You can supply rations and cannonballs on your ship at the Wharf.

- Supplying cannonballs will cost 10,000 silver per shot.

The Cannonball for Ship you have in possession can be sold to the Wharf Manager NPCs at the same price they have been purchased.

※ Note that Cannonball Capacity may differ for each ship.

  •
  • The way Cannonball for Ship are obtained was changed as ships now have the new  Cannonball Capacity function.

* The Cannonball for Ship and [Guild] Cannonball for Ship you have in possession can be sold to the Wharf Manager NPCs at the same price they have been purchased

- Cannonball for Ship can no longer be purchased through the Wharf Managers.

- Cannonball for Ship can no longer be manufactured in Siege Weapon Workshops.

- Cannonball for Ship can no longer be traded on the market.

We’re solo players. So, even on weekends when we head out to hunt Vell on our Epheria Sailboat and hide in a corner, then grab hold of the cannon then start firing. Every time we did this, we thought to ourselves, "Oh... I wish I could fire my cannons and steer my ship all by myself..." We always envied our fellow developers that were on their guild Galley with their guild mates as they happily opened their Vell Reward Bundles.

So, this is what we’ve prepared. Do not turn your ship in fear when you face the ferocious Ocean Stalker or the treacherous Goldmont Pirate Ship out at sea. Our adorable sailors are waiting under the deck to fire your cannons at your command!

However, the cannons position on top of the deck is stronger against the colossal sea monsters like Vell.

The available large ships are as follows:

Old: [Guild] Galley, Epheria Sailboat, Epheria Frigate, Old Bartali Sailboat

New: Epheria Caravel, Epheria Galleass, Bartali Sailboat, Epheria Carrack: Advance, Epheria Carrack: Balance, Epheria Carrack: Volante, Epheria Carrack: Valor

  •
  • Reef Hazard Zones were added to coastline areas by the Velia and Port Epheria.

- Reef Hazard Zone were added, so all ships in these areas were sent to the wharfs in nearby towns.

The large ships (Sailboat, Frigate, Caravel, Galleass, Carrack) will be damaged by the reefs if they enter these areas.

Monsters

  • Strange events have been occurring in the Al Halam Sea near Orisha Island, and the Altinovans have started referring to the region as the Sea of Silence.
  •
  • Sea monsters that were originally in the Ross Sea and Margoria Sea have expanded their habitat to the inland sea. They have been placed so that adventurers can hunt them according to the level of their ship. The sea monsters will not attack the adventurers first, so that adventurers who enjoy harpooning and following seagull hot spots can do so without being bothered by the sea monsters. The newly introduced Sea of Silence replaces the Young Hekaru hunting ground, and is much more profitable compared to other sea monsters. We are planning to add more hunting grounds so that adventurers may have better experiences with their upgrades hips.

Currents & Wind

  • Sea currents and winds have been introduced to the Black Desert world.

- Sea currents and winds do not affect those who are on land, however they will become stronger the further you sail out.

- Information regarding the sea current/wind will be displayed when you are on board. It’ll show you how strong the current/wind is, and its direction.

The blue indicator in the middle shows you the speed, and the cannon icons on the left and right side of the UI shows you the cooldown of your cannons and the number of cannonballs left.

Skilled sailors dream of sailing through the rough sea and safely arriving at the destination with one’s crew. Up until now, the seas of Black Desert have been peaceful and calm, with the exception of a few hurricanes and phantom ships stopping your journey here and there. Things are now different. You’ll be greeted with sea current and wind storming like a wild horse the further you sail out. The new environment may feel uncomfortable at first, however, sailors with experience and knowledge of the sea are waiting for you to recruit them. Are you ready to set sail and become the best captain known in the history of Black Desert?
