❖ The First Tale ❖
Tale of Chunhyang
~ Love Transcending Status ~

Once upon a time, in a town called Namwon,
there lived the daughter of a gisaeng named Chunhyang,
who was beautiful from a young age and skilled in poetry and painting.

When Chunhyang turned sixteen, Lee Mongryong, the son of the Namwon mayor, saw her on a swing and fell in love at first sight.

Mongryong ordered his servant to bring Chunhyang to him, but she refused.

That day, Mongryong went to meet Chunhyang in person, and as they talked, they gradually fell in love.

The two lived happily as a married couple,
but when Mongryong's father's term as mayor ended,
he had to leave for the capital (Seoul) with his father.

Meanwhile, the newly appointed mayor, Byeon Hakdo,
neglected his duties and held daily feasts, summoning famous gisaengs.
Hearing about the beautiful Chunhyang, he decided to invite her to one of his feasts.

During the feast, Byeon Hakdo asked Chunhyang to pour him a drink,

but Chunhyang, who had vowed to serve only her husband, refused.

Angered by her defiance, Byeon Hakdo imprisoned Chunhyang
and sentenced her to execution on his birthday.

Around that time, Mongryong, who had taken the state exam, passed with top honors and returned to Namwon as a royal inspector (an official who secretly inspects local officials).
To conceal his identity, he entered the town in humble attire.

The disguised Mongryong appeared at Byeon Hakdo's birthday feast,
asking to be allowed to drink in exchange for reciting a poem.

Unaware of Mongryong's true identity, Byeon Hakdo was about to
execute Chunhyang when the royal inspector revealed himself.

Byeon Hakdo and his men were arrested,
and the reunited couple lived happily ever after.

❖ The Second Tale ❖
Tale of Uturi
~One Bean and One Day~

Once upon a time, a long awaited child was born to a poor couple who they named Uturi.
However, neither a knife nor a sickle was able to cut his umbilical cord, yet they finally managed to cut it at last by using a grass reed.

From a young age, Uturi would be found in high places, impossible for a baby to reach.
Curious, the couple examined Uturi in secret, and to their surprise,
found he had small wings under his armpits that he was using to fly.

According to legends, a baby born with wings under their armpits
would grow up to become a hero. The couple grew afraid,
that the king might kill them or Uturi if he was to find out.

Fearing the king, the couple hid deeper in the mountains.
However, after hearing rumors, the king soon sent his soldiers to capture Uturi.

However, clever Uturi sensed the danger and disappeared.
Instead, the soldiers captured Uturi's parents and tortured them.

Truly clueless, the couple were finally released after a few days and returned home.
They found Uturi waiting for them there, with tears in his eyes.

Uturi suddenly asked his mother to roast some beans.
Whilst roasting them, one sprang out onto the floor,
and Uturi's mother, hungry, decided to eat it.

Using the beans his mother had roasted, Uturi created some armor for himself.
However, as one of the beans were missing, one of his armpits was left exposed.

 Uturi earnestly asked his mother:
"Mother, the king's soldiers will come for me again.
If I die fighting, please bury me behind the mountain rock.
You must bury me with soybeans, and red beans.
No one should know where I am buried for three years, and then we can meet again.”

As expected, the soldiers came again,
but their spears and arrows could not penetrate Uturi's bean armor.

When Uturi raised his left arm to counterattack,
the small bean-sized gap in his armor was exposed.
An arrow soon found its way there, fatefully taking his life.

The soldiers retreated, and bitterly weeping,
the couple buried their son Uturi with soybeans, and red beans
behind the mointain rock, as he requested.

A year later, rumors began to spread that Uturi was still alive.
The King sent troops to capture Uturi's parent’s house
and demanded them to reveal where Uturi was buried.

When they dug beneath the rock where Uturi was supposedly buried, they found nothing.
Enraged, the king struck the rock with a grass reed, which caused the rock to split open.
The soybeans and red beans buried with Uturi came pouring out of the rock,
and transformed into soldiers, horses, and weapons.
A gust of wind then blew through the rock, taking everything with it, including Uturi.

This event occoured the day before the third anniversary of Uturi’s death.

Shorly after, a winged horse appeared somewhere in the mountains.
It was a steed meant for the young hero. The horse wandered for days,
crying and searching for its master, until it eventually fell into a waterfall and lost its life.
Rumors spread that sounds of the horse could still be heard from the river,
leading villagers to believe that Uturi was still alive somewhere.
