Advanced Energy Guide
Let’s raise your max Energy!
The guide to gaining more Knowledge and Energy
How is Energy gained?
Energy is a very useful resource in the game.
It can be used in many valuable ways including Gathering, conversing and building Amity with NPCs, investing in Nodes, or viewing rare items sold at the Secret Shop.
At the beginning of Black Desert, the Adventurer starts off with only of maximum of 30 Energy.
You won’t be able to converse with NPCs, gather much items, or even reach level 2 when investing in Nodes with that amount of Energy.
Since 1 Energy is replenished every 3 minutes, you may wish to wait for it to fill up so you can try again, but it’s not possible to view items at the Secret Shop which requires 50 Energy.
Veterans Adventurers will often recommend taking steps to increase your maximum Energy in the early stages of your adventure.
Increasing your maximum Energy mostly involves gaining Knowledge, which can be obtained by encountering landmarks, conversing with NPCs, hunting monsters, and completing quests.
You can check various Knowledge categories in the Knowledge window (H).
Filling up the list of entries in any given Knowledge category will increase your maximum Energy.
Since most will only require 2/3 of the list to be filled up, if your goal is to increase Energy rather than collecting all available Knowledge, then it is not that difficult.
▲ Collecting Knowledge and filling up the categories in the Knowledge window (Hotkey H) can be an enjoyable goal to pursue should you wish to do so.
Acquiring Island Knowledge
One of the easier ways to increase your maximum Energy is to gain Knowledge through an NPC character and Topography.
Most NPCs give Knowledge just by meeting them, and you can easily acquire Topographical Knowledge naturally while you move around the Black Desert world doing quests.
However, there are Knowledge entries that you can’t acquire unless you are actively trying to get them, and Island Knowledge where you can get lots of Energy, is considered one of them.
Unless the Adventurer is fishing, there aren’t that many reasons for them to visit the island regions. Thus, those that focus on quests for hunting, trade, and other life activities rather than fishing quests will often find the sea areas of their World Map still covered in dark.
If you would however, like to increase the maximum Energy to its full potential, then it is a good idea to start by preparing a ship.
If you find a Fishing Boat too expensive, a Rowboat will suffice as well.
They are very slow, but if you lack the funds to acquire a Fishing Boat, Rowboats will get you where you need to go. Another alternative is to acquire the ‘Splat Fisher’s Clothes Set’ and swim.
If you have your transportation ready, you can embark on your exploration. You can start from Velia, Epheria, or any other place by the sea.
The method is simple. While at sea, explore every island you come across and acquire any Topographical Knowledge you can find, and go to the Node Manager on each island and talk to them in order to gain Knowledge on NPCs.
Just by doing this, you’ll be able to easily increase your maximum Energy by 30~40.
▲ Islands of various sizes dot the sea north of Velia. The potential maximum Energy you can gain here is considerably large.
Acquiring Character/Topography Knowledge
If you have found all of the islands, the next step is to acquire Knowledge in towns and villages.
Most NPCs dwell within towns, but some NPCs roam the landscape or require specific conditions to be met in order to gain access to the Knowledge they hold, so it’s not that easy to acquire them.
If your objective is to increase your maximum Energy as fast as possible, it is recommended that you get the Knowledge you can and move onto the next town quickly.
When acquiring the Topography and Character Knowledge in a town, it is better to get the Topography out of the way first. After gaining Knowledge on the Topography in a town, you can open the map (M) and right-click on the Node to locate the Node Manager reducing your chances of getting lost while looking for them.
If you are about to give up looking for the Topography, try talking with the NPCs near the town.
By increasing the Amity with NPCs, you can sometimes acquire the Topography Knowledge without having to move around. This does take a lot of effort, so do this as a last resort.
▲ The picture on the left shows that you cannot acquire Knowledge from the NPC. The picture on the right shows that you need to meet another character before you can acquire the Knowledge. The name of the NPC you need to find will be highlighted in yellow.
Lani and Kina are wandering General Goods Vendors. You can find them in the farms near Velia. Garnil is inside a building near Tachros.
It is possible to speak to Crucio Domongatt when your Amity with Carolin reaches 201 or over, or when Amity with Jarrett reaches 501 or over. Otherwise you can speak with him naturally while doing the main quest.
To meet Herman Feresio, your Amity with Valks and Theophil Batian needs to reach 500.
To acquire Knowledge with Lehard Motenon, you must have spoken with Herman Feresio beforehand, have your Amity with Bipache at 301 or over, and have finished Leona’s quest.
You will be able to speak to Marco Faust naturally while doing the serial quests in Keplan. To acquire Knowledge with Tina your Amity with Fiory must reach 201.
It is possible to speak to Bavio after you acquire Knowledge of every other NPC within the category. Porio, Latro, Porio Execution Chief, Porio Investigation Chief are all gathered in Sarma Outpost. |
Acquiring Ecology Knowledge
First open the Knowledge window (H) and check the “Ecology” category.
All Knowledge about monsters you have gathered so far will be listed there.
When you expand the categories, those that are marked ‘Energy Increased by 2/2’ indicate that you have gained all available Knowledge in that category and you cannot fill it any further.
You should instead, look at the categories marked ‘Energy Increased by 0/2’ or ‘Energy Increased by 1/2’. There will be some entries within those categories that will show up in question marks ('??????' or '?????????') that need to be filled. You can move to the appropriate hunting grounds to fill up the category.
If you have glasses equipped, the chance of you acquiring Knowledge when hunting monsters goes up, but the glasses are not an absolute necessity.
You can acquire monster Knowledge through gathering from such things as a Boar’s skin, or mining for ore from a Stoneback Crab. - Balenos
Knowledge on Cobwebs can be obtained when you reach 201 Amity with Amaranto in Glish.

Acquiring Adventure Journals/Scholarship Knowledge
When you have gathered some Topography/Character and Ecology knowledge, it is now time to look at Adventure Journals and Scholarship knowledge.
It is possible to gather Adventure Journals and Scholar Knowledge entries naturally while traveling around the Black Desert world with the Black Spirit you meet in Olvia, but much Knowledge is hidden in the Black Desert world.
You can discover these hidden Knowledge through following methods.
Quests
When you veer away from the path that the Black Spirit takes you, and just go around meeting NPCs at your leisure and doing their quests, you can acquire many Adventure Journals.
They are the record of the adventure an adventurer has taken.
▲ Finishing quests may sometimes awards you Knowledge.
Conversing with NPCs
There are many NPCs in Black Desert who each have their own stories.
If you meet an NPC for the first time, try to speak to them first.
By checking the Amity on the bottom left side of the screen, you can check what kind of stories this NPC will tell you when you become friendly with them.
The process of increasing Amity might be difficult at times, but considering the maximum Energy gain and if you enjoy the stories, it might be worthwhile to check out.
▲ You can acquire the ‘Goblin Characteristics’ Knowledge at 301 Amity.
Interacting with Objects
If you see a stone statue or a bookcase, etc. get close to it and try to interact with it if possible.
Many Adventure Journals and Scholarship Knowledge entries are waiting to be discovered by Adventurers
Some NPCs will demand a prerequisite Scholarship Knowledge when engaging in Amity games so collecting Scholarship Knowledge is considered important.
▲ At times you can obtain Knowledge from specific objects in the world.
Try the [Calpheon and Valkyries] which raises energy by 7 for completing just one category. It looks difficult to finish because this one theme has 43 Knowledge entries in it, But it is one of the easiest themes to complete because most of the Knowledge can be acquired simply by reading books in the library at the Holy College of Calpheon. However, in order to get ‘A Talk with Elion’ (one of the 43), you must activate and complete the quest - ‘A Talk with Elion’ from priestess Annolisa Rosie, at the Holy College of Calpheon. (This quest can be done after finishing the quest ‘Balker’s Idol’ from Balker Batian.) If you want to gain Adventure Journals and Scholarship Knowledge entries, you can’t just focus on talking to NPCs or just doing quests, but need to try to acquiring Knowledge through various sources. |
You may get tired if you just solely focus on ‘Gathering Energy’ or ‘Gathering Knowledge’.
Your maximum Energy will naturally go up when you raise your character with quests and hunting, so you might want to focus on building your character first. Then, you can work on acquiring more after you reach a higher level at your own pace.
A word of advice - Rather than thinking that you must finish everything within a day, the gathering of information, reading about each Knowledge imbedded in the game as you get to know the Black Desert world in your own unique style and understanding, will truly allow you to enjoy it much more.
